Gozzoburg

Gozzoburg is a medieval castle in the center of Krems an der Donau with thick stone walls and defensive towers. The building sits directly on the riverbank and displays the typical construction style of a medieval fortress.

The castle was founded in the 13th century and served as a residence for nobility and traveling merchants. It played an important role as a defensive structure in this strategic location on the Danube.

The interior walls display the oldest secular frescoes in Austria, painted by medieval artists across the rooms. These decorated surfaces reveal the artistic taste and creative expression of the period directly to visitors.

Access is through guided tours in small groups, so it helps to reserve spots in advance. The location is easy to reach on foot since the castle sits in the town center.

Some rooms still preserve original wall paintings from the 13th century that craftsmen applied with pigments into plaster. These works require special care today to protect the colors and details from deterioration.
