St Wolfgang altarpiece, Gothic winged altarpiece in Sankt Wolfgang im Salzkammergut, Austria
The St Wolfgang altarpiece features a double-transforming design with movable wings, revealing different scenes depending on their position within the church calendar.
Between 1471 and 1481, Michael Pacher created this altarpiece under commission from Abbot Benedict Eck of Mondsee for the Parish Church.
The centerpiece displays the Coronation of the Virgin Mary with Christ enthroned, surrounded by angels and accompanied by John the Evangelist.
The altarpiece measures 1088 centimeters in height and 660 centimeters in width, making it one of Europe's largest carved and painted altar shrines.
The structure combines painted panels with sculptural elements, including a carved Crucifix and relief of the Adoration of the Magi at its base.
