Schloss Wildbach, Deutschlandsberg

Schloss Wildbach is a four-towered castle sitting on a hill in the Wildbach valley, marked by ochre-colored stucco decorations above its windows. The corners feature decorative plaster work that gives the building its distinctive appearance.

The castle was first built in the 13th century but was destroyed by Turkish forces in earlier attacks. Between 1534 and 1540, Sigmund von Wildenstein rebuilt the structure following this destruction.

The chapel inside honors Saint Anna and holds furnishings from the 1700s that reflect the family's faith. You can see how religion was woven into daily life at this home.

The castle is owned by multiple private families who work together to maintain it, so access may be limited. It is worth checking ahead about visiting possibilities since conditions can vary depending on the season.

The famous composer Franz Schubert visited the castle for a short weekend in September 1827. A commemorative plaque above the entrance gate still marks this visit from one of the Romantic era's greatest musicians.
