Wolfsberg Castle, Medieval castle in Wolfsberg, Austria.
Wolfsberg Castle is a hilltop castle in the town of Wolfsberg in the Austrian region of Carinthia, overlooking the town center below. The building combines medieval foundations with English Gothic elements added in the 19th century, including towers, pointed arches, and decorative stonework.
A first fortress on this site was built in the Middle Ages and served for centuries as the seat of various noble families. In the 19th century, the Henckel von Donnersmarck family had the building thoroughly rebuilt in the English Gothic Revival style, giving it the form it has today.
Wolfsberg Castle today serves as the seat of the district administration, which means ordinary people visit it for everyday official matters. This gives the building a role that goes beyond tourism, making it a working part of local life.
The castle is easy to reach on foot from Wolfsberg town center, as it sits on a hill just above the main streets. Since part of the building is used as a public administration office, not all areas are open to visitors, so checking access in advance is a good idea.
Gravestones from the 16th century are set directly into the outer walls of the castle, easy to miss if you walk past without looking closely. These stones are thought to come from an earlier cemetery or church that was cleared when the site was rebuilt.
