Peuerbach Castle

Peuerbach Castle is a stone structure with architectural elements from different periods, including a preserved Renaissance gate and original defensive walls. The castle now houses a museum with exhibitions about regional history and important figures.

The Counts of Schaunberg built the original fortress around 1370 as a defensive structure. After a fire in 1571 destroyed the library and armory, the complex was reconstructed.

The astronomer Georg von Peuerbach came from this region and his work shaped maritime navigation. The exhibitions show how his instruments and calculations were put to practical use in daily life of that era.

The museum opens on specific weekends during certain months, so it is best to check opening times in advance. Plan enough time to walk through the rooms and see the collections at a relaxed pace.

The museum preserves over 200 hand-carved figurines depicting rural festivals and celebrations in authentic regional dress. This collection vividly shows how people celebrated and lived their daily lives in earlier times.
