Schloss Limberg, Maissau, Renaissance castle in Maissau, Austria.
Schloss Limberg is a Renaissance-style castle featuring a two-story structure with a square floor plan and an arcaded courtyard in the center. A tower crowned with a distinctive pyramid roof rises above the main building and marks the property's profile.
Construction of the castle began in the early 17th century, replacing an earlier farm building that stood on the site. In 1755, ownership transferred to Stift Altenburg monastery, which has maintained the property since then.
Two medieval stone lions discovered during renovations in the castle walls symbolize power and defense of the noble family. These sculptures were later moved to Stift Altenburg, where visitors can still see them today.
The castle is located in the Limberg area and visible from the outside, though interior access is limited. Plan ahead to visit, as opening hours are restricted to certain days and times of the week.
Archaeological digs beneath the current building uncovered substantial foundation walls suggesting earlier significant structures at this location. These findings indicate the site held importance well before the Renaissance castle was built.
