Schloss Kohfidisch

Schloss Kohfidisch is a three-wing castle in eastern Austria built around a central section with a pyramid-shaped roof that faces an open courtyard to the east. The structure is surrounded by mature trees and shows the typical architectural style of manor houses in this region.

The Erdődy family purchased the estate in 1496 from the Counts of Ellerbach and converted the original farmhouse into a castle during the 17th century. The building's current form with its distinctive architectural features developed during this transformation period.

The chapel inside holds layers of wall paintings from the late 16th and 17th centuries that were uncovered during restoration work. These painted surfaces show how artistic tastes changed over generations in this space.

The basement section now functions as a restaurant and event venue, while the main wing's ceremonial halls host celebrations and gatherings. Visitors should know that interior access depends on scheduled events or requires advance booking for tours.

Between 1945 and 1949, the building served as a Soviet Army command post for the Oberwart district before suffering damage from theft of building materials in the postwar years. This period left a lasting mark on the structure and its story.
