Freigut Thallern

Freigut Thallern is a winery set across rolling hills with traditional architecture and modern production facilities nestled among established vineyards. The property spans multiple levels and combines historic cellars with contemporary wine-making techniques.

This winery was founded in 1141 when granted to the Cistercian Order and is Austria's second-oldest wine production site. It has maintained continuous winemaking across more than 8 centuries.

The wine shop displays products from local producers and makes traditional Austrian varieties like Rotgipfler and Zierfandler accessible to visitors. You can taste the flavors that define this wine region and learn which grapes thrive in this area.

You can book guided tours that start at the Johannes Chapel and pass through the barrique cellar to reach the archive of rare bottles. These tours last around 20 minutes and give a thorough overview of the entire property.

The Polz family operates the entire property on behalf of Heiligenkreuz monastery, marrying ancient winemaking tradition with modern production methods. This blend of centuries-old continuity and present-day innovation defines the place.
