Freilichtmuseum Ensemble Gerersdorf, Open-air museum in Gerersdorf bei Güssing, Austria
The Freilichtmuseum Ensemble Gerersdorf is a collection of about 35 buildings that show traditional architecture from southern Burgenland. The houses have thatched roofs and come from different periods, some more than 200 years old.
The museum started in 1976 around an old farmhouse from the early 19th century. Over time, more historical buildings were brought from their original locations here and reconstructed.
The displayed objects show how farmers and craftspeople lived and worked in this region. You see tools, furniture, and everyday items that reflect the rhythm of rural life across generations.
The museum has a large outdoor area that you can explore at your own pace. The paths are easy to walk and there are several rest areas if you need a break.
Each building was brought from its original location to this site and reconstructed by hand. This laborious work was largely done by local volunteers, which gives the project its special character.
