Parish church of St. Gallus, Roman Catholic parish church in Bregenz, Austria

The Parish Church of St. Gallus is a Baroque Roman Catholic church on a terrace in the Dorf district of Bregenz, above the Thalbach valley. A late Gothic west tower with a curved gable and onion dome fronts a steep-roofed nave with low side chapels and a recessed choir. Inside, a three-bay nave carries a shallow barrel vault on walls with stucco capitals.

A Romanesque church stood here from the second half of the 5th century; when Columban and Gallus stayed in Bregenz in 610 they found it ruined and dedicated it to St Aurelia. The church was mentioned in 1079 at the founding of Mehrerau Abbey, and in 1380 the single-nave building was consecrated with a square choir. After a fire in 1477 a new choir with a 3/8 close and a west tower were built and consecrated in 1480; Franz Anton Beer rebuilt the interior in 1737.

The church is dedicated to Saint Gallus, the Irish monk who stayed in Bregenz with Columban around 610 and found a ruined church there. Its furnishings recall that era of patronage: the high altar of 1746 by Abraham Bader shows Gallus among its figures, and Maria Theresa, who donated 1500 gulden for it, is said to appear in the face of the shepherdess in the Nativity painting.

The church stands on a terrace at Kirchplatz in the Dorf district, southeast of the old town, on ground that falls toward the Thalbach stream and rises toward the Gallusstift and Gebhardsberg. The west front is preceded by a late-Gothic tower whose ground floor forms a vaulted entrance porch.

The church stands on a terrace above the Thalbach stream, between the Gallusstift and the Gebhardsberg. Excavations in 1973 uncovered an early Romanesque rectangular building and a later three-aisled predecessor beneath the floor. The silver altar, about 40 silver pieces mostly from Augsburg workshops, was long kept in the sacristy and only set up before the high altar on special occasions; since 2010 it has stood in the left side chapel.
