Huettenberg Lingkor, Buddhist pilgrimage stairs in Hüttenberg, Austria.
Huettenberg Lingkor is a Buddhist pilgrimage route with stone stairs near Hüttenberg, Austria, climbing through a forested hillside with meditation stations and prayer wheels placed along the way. Local crystals and Himalayan architectural elements are built into the path itself.
The Lingkor was built as a Buddhist circumambulation path, drawing on the spiritual traditions of Himalayan Buddhism. Its creation here is linked to Heinrich Harrer, the mountaineer and Tibet traveler who was born in Hüttenberg.
Prayer wheels along the steps can be spun clockwise by visitors, following a Tibetan Buddhist custom tied to the recitation of mantras. Each spin is considered a spiritual act, and many people walk the full route slowly, stopping at each station.
The path is most accessible from May through October, as the stairs can become slippery in cold or wet conditions. Parking is available near the Heinrich Harrer Museum, which is a good starting point for finding the route.
An iron suspension bridge crosses part of the route and was built using Bhutanese construction methods dating back to the 14th century. It is an unexpected sight in the middle of an Alpine setting.
