St. Sebald am Heiligenstein, Religious monument in Gaflenz, Austria
St. Sebald am Heiligenstein stands at 782 meters elevation between Gaflenz and Weyer, displaying a late Gothic cubic form topped with a high hipped roof. A tower rises prominently from the structure, forming the main vertical accent of the building.
The church received its consecration in 1413 by Suffragan Bishop Andreas I. Tallaci, and a tower was added in 1733. The main altar was constructed later, between 1776 and 1777.
The altar features a statue of Saint Sebald set against shining gold rays on a tabernacle. This arrangement shows how deeply the community here honors this particular saint through its artistic choices.
Visitors can view the interior during regular religious services or explore the grounds at other times. The church includes a viewing area where the reliquary of Saint Sebald, installed in 2021, is on display.
This is the only church in Austria dedicated to Saint Sebaldus of Nuremberg, who was recognized for his missionary work in the region. This singular dedication makes the location historically distinctive.
