Schloss Achleiten bei Limbach, Historic castle in Strengberg, Austria.
Schloss Achleiten bei Limbach is a white castle in Strengberg with a rectangular design that fits into the Lower Austrian landscape. The building stands at Generalstraße 1 and forms a prominent part of the local streetscape.
The current castle was built between 1727 and 1734 on the orders of Abbot Gregor I Plaichshirn after flood damage threatened an earlier location. Moving to higher ground allowed the monks to maintain their summer residence safely for many years.
The castle was home to a monastic community for generations and still shows traces of this religious past. The layout and preserved details speak to how monks once lived and worked here.
The castle is in private ownership of the Weichs family and is not open to visitors for tours. However, its location on Generalstraße allows visitors to view the exterior facade from the street.
The castle's chapel was dismantled in 1836 on the orders of Baron von Blomberg and its religious items were moved to the local kindergarten chapel. This unusual fate shows how the use of historic buildings can change dramatically over time.
