Kirchenruine Virgilienberg, Gothic church ruins on hilltop in Friesach, Austria
The stone walls of the former church display preserved tracery windows and supporting buttresses, with remaining architectural elements from medieval construction techniques.
The church, dedicated to Saint Virgil after his canonization in 1233, suffered multiple fires in 1309, 1752, and 1816, leading to its current ruined state.
This religious complex once contained a library of European significance and served as a fortified monastery under the administration of provosts.
The ruins are accessible through marked paths from Friesach's center, with informational panels explaining the site's architectural and historical elements.
The remaining choir section features ornamental consoles and circular supports that previously held the church's vaulted ceiling structure.
