Wallfahrtskirche Maria Schnee, Gothic pilgrimage church in Obermauern, Austria
The Wallfahrtskirche Maria Schnee features late Gothic frescoes painted by Simon von Taisten, displaying exceptional artistry throughout the interior spaces.
Built around 1456, the church gained prominence during the 17th century plague when residents initiated an annual ram sacrifice tradition that continues today.
From July to September, visitors can join weekly 45-minute cultural tours exploring the church's architectural elements and religious artifacts every Friday afternoon.
The church stands in the center of Obermauern, accessible via Virgental Straße, with guided tours available without advance registration during summer months.
The church maintains a centuries-old custom where locals present a symbolic ram offering, stemming from a historical vow made during the plague period.
