Stockerauer Au

Stockerauer Au is a protected forest with wetland areas and varied woodland sections near Stockerau. The area features multiple hiking trails of different lengths and educational paths that provide information about local ecosystems.

The area underwent profound changes when ash trees, which once dominated the forest, died off on a large scale due to disease. This shift permanently shaped the landscape and prompted a redesign of the woodland structure.

Annual tree planting celebrations bring together municipalities from Lower Austria, where each community plants its own tree to strengthen environmental bonds. Visitors can witness how local communities actively engage with nature conservation efforts in this shared space.

The forest area is easily accessible and offers routes suitable for different fitness levels and interests. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear, as the paths lead through damp areas and uneven terrain.

The forest management team works deliberately on renewal through manual and mechanical clearing to make space for native species like oaks and hornbeams. This active transformation demonstrates how degraded woodland areas are intentionally converted back into natural habitats.
