Museum Liaunig, Private museum in Neuhaus, Austria.
Museum Liaunig is a private museum in Neuhaus, Carinthia, built into a hillside with a black metal exterior and long glass fronts. Most of the exhibition spaces sit below ground level, while skylights channel daylight into the galleries.
The museum opened in 2008 to give public access to a private collection that Herbert Liaunig had been building for decades. An extension completed in 2015 added more underground gallery space to the original building.
The museum brings together Austrian post-war art, African glass bead works, and European portrait miniatures in the same building. Walking through the galleries, visitors can see how different artistic traditions respond to similar themes in very different ways.
The museum opens seasonally, so it is worth checking the current hours before making the trip. Parking is available on the grounds, and the entrance is clearly signed from the road.
The museum holds one of the largest collections of African glass bead art in Europe, a section that many visitors walk past on their way to the contemporary works. The beads were made using traditional methods passed down within specific African communities, and no two pieces are the same.
