Sankt Adolari, Gothic pilgrimage church in Sankt Ulrich am Pillersee, Austria
Sankt Adolari is a Gothic church perched on a hillside above the Pillersee lake in a small mountain village. The building features a rectangular main hall, a multi-sided choir section, and a bell tower topped with a pointed gable roof.
A chapel was built on this site in 1401 but was replaced with a Gothic church just 6 years later in 1407. Baroque alterations in the late 1600s were followed by a period of closure that lasted until 1832.
The interior displays Gothic frescoes from around 1440 showing scenes of Mary's life and Christ, alongside paintings of Saint Adolar added centuries later. These artworks draw pilgrims who come to see the religious narratives painted across the walls.
The church sits along Kirchweg road in the village and its exterior can be viewed at any time. For visits inside and current opening times, it is best to check ahead or contact the local parish office.
Archaeological digs in the 1990s uncovered foundations of an even older building that stood on this spot around 1200. This discovery shows that pilgrims have been drawn to this location for at least 800 years.
