Piarist church Krems

The Piarist Church is a Gothic place of worship in Krems featuring steep structural forms, profiled pillars, and handcrafted details throughout its hall design. The interior displays characteristic Gothic architectural elements like capitals and columns that shape the spatial layout.

This building was constructed around 1284 and underwent major remodeling in the 15th century, when the choir was consecrated in 1457 and later sanctified again in 1508. These phases of transformation shaped the structure we see today.

The church holds a Baroque high altar created by Joseph Maria Götz and an altarpiece by Martin Johann Schmidt from the 1700s showing the Ascension of Mary. These artworks shape the interior and reflect the religious devotion practiced here.

This place of worship is reached through a covered staircase leading to a renovated parish square. Access is from Frauenberggasse 4-6, making it easy to locate and approach.

A watchtower on the eastern side has belonged to the city since 1616 and served for a long time as housing for the city tower keeper. This secondary function remains little known even though it was part of urban life for centuries.
