Teufelstein, Mountain summit in Styria, Austria.
Teufelstein is a summit in the Fischbach Alps that reaches approximately 1,500 meters in elevation. Its distinctive feature is a natural formation of three stacked rock blocks standing about 20 feet (6 meters) high.
The mountain's name comes from medieval folklore about the Devil attempting to build a tower to heaven by Christmas Eve. This legend shaped how local communities understood and spoke about the place for generations.
This summit draws hikers and pilgrims following the Styrian Mariazell Trail throughout the year. Visitors come to experience the views and connect with the spiritual journey that passes through this mountain landscape.
The hike to the summit follows a circular route of about 9 kilometers with roughly 450 meters of elevation gain. Starting points are located near Zellerkreuz and the Fischbach parish church, both offering clear access and trail markers.
On the winter solstice, groups gather at the summit before dawn to watch the sunrise. This traditional gathering has occurred for many years and connects visitors with a special natural event.
