Tierpark Haag, Animal park in Haag, Austria
Tierpark Haag is a zoo in the town of Haag, in the state of Lower Austria, set on the grounds of former Salaberg Castle. The site features a range of enclosures of different sizes, embedded within an old tree-lined park, and is home to around 700 animals from many species.
The grounds around Salaberg Castle were laid out as a landscaped park in the late 19th century. In 1973, the site was transformed into a public zoo, which has since grown into a well-known destination in Lower Austria.
The zoo sits within the grounds of Salaberg Castle, where the old park layout is still visible around the animal enclosures. Families from the surrounding area come here regularly, making it a place where children often have their first close encounter with farm and wild animals.
Most enclosures are outdoors, so a visit is more comfortable in dry weather. The grounds cover a large area, so wear sturdy shoes and set aside enough time to walk through everything at a relaxed pace.
The park accepts animals that have no other place to go, including orphaned or confiscated wildlife that cannot be released into the wild. This means that some of the animals living here arrived not as planned acquisitions but as rescues.
