Schloss Aschach an der Donau, Renaissance castle in Aschach an der Donau, Austria
Schloss Aschach an der Donau is a Renaissance castle with four wings surrounding a quadratic courtyard. The south side features three stories while the east wing, called Fürstenstöckl, rises two stories and contains ornate rooms including a marble hall and ballrooms.
The castle came under the ownership of the Harrach family starting in 1622 and remained in their hands for over three centuries. This long period of family stewardship ended after World War Two when different management took control of the property.
The halls host art exhibitions and musical performances throughout the year, bringing visitors to experience culture within the Renaissance architecture. The rooms themselves tell stories through their design and decorative details, which frame the cultural events held there.
Visitors can explore the interior during guided tours that show the marble hall, ballrooms, and wine cellar. Overnight stays are available in the bed and breakfast accommodations within the building, allowing travelers to spend more time in the area.
An English garden was created on the grounds in 1825 by the Harrach family's gardener and extends partly toward the Danube riverbank. The garden maintains both private and public sections, offering visitors a view of the river from among the landscaped spaces.
