Schloss Bernau, Protected castle in Fischlham, Austria

Schloss Bernau is a moated castle in Fischlham featuring a grand ballroom at water level, multiple catering rooms, and a spacious courtyard. The layout allows the building to serve different events and gatherings.

Pernau was first mentioned in 1189, linked to Timo de pernowe, and the Pernauer family held the seat until 1405. The Oberhaimer later converted the residence into a moated castle, and in 1730 Leopold von Eyselsberg had it rebuilt in Baroque style by master builder Wolf Grinzenberger of Wels. The Handlbauer family acquired the castle in 1979 and renovated it; in 2007 the owners received the Upper Austrian heritage conservation prize.

The Handlbauer family uses the castle as a venue for concerts ranging from classical to folk music. Visitors can experience live performances during their stay, making it an active cultural center for the region.

The castle stands on a conglomerate rock above a water ditch, reached by a masonry bridge and a gate; the entrance itself is built on pilotis. The four-winged Meierhof opposite is entered through a gate arch beneath a square gate tower. The guest house "Schloss Bernau" offers overnight stays.

The castle chapel in the right corner tower was redesigned between 1993 and 1997 by the artist Anton Krajnc as a memorial to Doris, the young daughter of Herbert and Gerhild Handlbauer. The family bought the castle in 1979 and renovated it over the following years.
