Schloss Grades, Medieval château in Metnitz, Austria.

Schloss Grades sits on a steep rocky hill above the Metnitzbach stream, with a three-winged structure surrounding an irregular courtyard and featuring Gothic doorways and windows. The castle occupies a prominent position that makes it visible from the surrounding landscape and offers views down into the valley below.

The castle was first documented in 1285 and served as an administrative center for the Bishopric of Gurk. It controlled the bishop's holdings in the Metnitztal region for centuries afterward.

The name Grades comes from the Slavic word 'Grad', meaning castle, reflecting early settlements of Slavic peoples in this Austrian region. This name origin tells of the different communities that shaped this place over the centuries.

Access to the castle can be challenging since it sits on a steep slope with steep paths leading to the entrance. Wear sturdy shoes and take extra care when the ground is wet.

The northeastern section holds a double chapel from the 12th century featuring elaborate stucco work created between 1720 and 1725. This blend of Gothic core and later Baroque decoration reveals the many building phases the castle went through over time.
