Schloss Harmannsdorf, Renaissance castle in Harmannsdorf, Austria
Schloss Harmannsdorf is a three-winged building with a hipped roof in the Waldviertel region, in the district of Horn in Lower Austria. It sits among fields and farmland and belongs to the municipality of Burgschleinitz-Kühnring.
The property was first recorded in 1254, with Otto von Maissau named as an early guardian, and it changed hands several times over the following centuries. In 1589 it was joined with nearby Zogelsdorf castle to form a single estate.
The castle carries the founder's name and remains a witness to centuries of local life. Visitors can still observe structures that shaped daily routines and regional connections over generations.
The castle is best reached by car, as it sits in a rural area near smaller villages in the Horn district. Walking around the surroundings is easy, since the terrain is flat and open.
The name Harmannsdorf comes from a medieval personal name and points directly to the earliest known owner of the site. This kind of naming is not rare in the Waldviertel, but here the connection is well documented.
