Schloss Litzlberg, Historic castle on an island in Lake Attersee, Austria
Schloss Litzlberg sits on an island of roughly 6000 square meters in Lake Attersee and displays architectural features from 1896. A pier built in 1917 connects the island to the mainland, making the structure visible from the shore.
A fortress from the 14th century originally occupied this location, but it was demolished in 1780. The stones were later used to reconstruct the nearby town of Schörfling after severe fires.
The castle attracted creative figures in the early 20th century, including an artist who painted multiple works of the lake region. These artistic connections turned the location into a notable meeting point for Vienna's cultural circles.
The castle and island have been private property since 1974 and can only be viewed from outside. Visitors can best see the structure from the lake or from the shoreline path.
A Viennese banker constructed the castle to win the heart of an opera singer, who ultimately married someone else. This romantic tale makes the structure a testament to hope and heartbreak captured in its design.
