Wasserschloss Freiling

Wasserschloss Freiling is a water castle in the northern area of Oftering featuring a distinctive tower and surrounding gardens. The complex sits within an expansive park landscape and displays remnants of water trenches that once served defensive purposes.

The castle was first recorded in 1170 and changed hands multiple times, including ownership by the Sinzendorf and Kauthen families in the 17th century. These shifts in ownership shaped how the building developed and was used through the subsequent centuries.

The estate served as a center for musical performances after being developed for this purpose by an owner in the early 1900s. Visitors can still sense this cultural role through the spaces designed to host gatherings and concerts for the surrounding community.

Access is limited since the castle remains privately owned, with only the courtyard of the service buildings open to visitors. It is best to check in advance whether visits are possible and to respect the boundaries of the private property.

A notably important visitor was Francis of Lorraine, who later became the husband of Empress Maria Theresa, though the exact timing of his stay remains unclear. This historical visit demonstrates the prominence the castle held in aristocratic circles.
