The lake's presence influenced the naming of Seefeld settlement, first documented in 1022 as 'Sevelt,' meaning field by the lake in ancient German.
Emperor Maximilian I established the lake as a lamprey breeding site, giving it the local name 'Lampretensee' during the historical fishing period.
Two designated swimming beaches border the lake, with changing facilities, a children's pool, and a volleyball court available for visitors during summer months.
The lake's protected status as a natural monument since 1926 prohibits fishing activities, allowing its ecosystem to maintain natural biological processes.
