Ruine Ligist, Medieval castle ruins in Ligist, Austria
The remnants of Burg Ligist occupy a hilltop position on the Wartenstein spur, standing 40 meters above the Ligist Valley in Styria.
The fortress, constructed in the late 12th century by Eppenstein vassals, protected trade routes until its abandonment in the early 19th century.
The castle site reflects architectural developments from multiple periods, with structures dating from the 12th through 17th centuries visible in its remains.
Visitors reach the ruins through a wooden bridge over the former drawbridge location, with parking available on Ruinenweg before the site entrance.
The Renaissance-era Bergfried tower rises 18.7 meters high as the oldest structure within the castle complex, marking the skyline above Ligist Valley.
