City of Graz – Historic Centre and Schloss Eggenberg

City of Graz – Historic Centre and Schloss Eggenberg, Medieval urban ensemble in Graz, Austria.

This UNESCO site comprises the historic core and Schloss Eggenberg, with over 1000 buildings displaying Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque elements along winding streets and passages. The palace sits east of town and features Renaissance architecture with intricate interior arrangements.

During Habsburg rule in the 16th century, Graz became a fortified residence city with defensive walls and the Schlossberg fortress dominating the landscape. This period established the urban layout and architectural character that survives today.

The Landhaus serves as a gathering place for regional administration while its spaces host exhibitions about Styrian history and culture. Visitors can see how government and cultural life remain intertwined in daily civic practice.

The city center is easily walkable with many passages and side streets that make navigation straightforward. The palace is located to the east and is accessible by public transport or a short bus ride.

The palace displays striking astronomical symbolism with 365 windows representing the days of a year built into its design. Twenty-four state rooms arranged according to the hours of the day reveal how Renaissance architects encoded cosmic order into the building's structure.
