Stadtbefestigung Gmünd in Kärnten

The Stadtbefestigung Gmünd is a system of walls, towers, and gates that surround the medieval town in a parallelogram shape. The complex includes several gate towers such as the Lower Gate and the Pankratius Gate, which represent different phases of development.

The fortification was built between 1240 and 1270 and received its largest expansions after 1346 when Gmünd officially received city rights. These improvements to the defensive system followed the town's growing prosperity and importance in Carinthia.
