Stadtteater Baden, Heritage theater in Baden, Austria

The Stadttheater Baden stands on Theaterplatz, built in 1909 to plans by Fellner & Helmer in Jugendstil style. Its auditorium seats 816 across the parterre and two tiers. The building replaced the Kornhäusel Theater, which had held 1,200 people.

The present house was built by Fellner & Helmer after the municipal council decided on a new building on 9 July 1908; it opened on 2 October 1909 in the presence of Archduke Rainer. The planned name Kaiser-Franz-Joseph-Jubiläums-Stadttheater was shortened to Jubiläums-Stadttheater because the Viennese court did not process the request. It replaced Joseph Kornhäusel's Hoftheater an der Schwechat of 1812, demolished for structural decay and fire risk.

The house stages operettas and musicals, and its festive programme keeps a tradition from the 1909 opening: Beethoven's Die Weihe des Hauses, composed in Baden, the coronation scene from Grillparzer's König Ottokars Glück und Ende and Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus, which by textual hints is set in Baden. The theatre's name was shortened from Jubiläums-Stadttheater because the Vienna court left the request for the longer title unanswered.
