Steiner Tor

The Steiner Tor is a gate tower in Krems featuring two large round-arched openings and towers positioned on either side of the medieval structure. The facade displays carved stonework and shows architectural elements from different periods of its existence.

The gate was built in 1480 under Friedrich III and served as a key entrance to the city at that time. Nearly 280 years later, the structure underwent a significant renovation that added new architectural details to its appearance.

The coat of arms carved into the entrance walls shows symbols of past rulers who held power over this territory. These visible emblems give visitors a sense of which authorities shaped the city over time.

The gate sits at the Dr.-Karl-Dorrek-Straße intersection and marks the start of Krems' main pedestrian zone. It serves as an easy-to-find landmark and good reference point for visitors exploring the town center on foot.

Metal cubes at the base of the gate hold inscriptions that honor residents whose lives were affected by tragic events in the early 1940s. This memorial installation encourages visitors to reflect on the location's past and shapes how people understand the site today.
