Steirisches Volkskundemuseum

Steirisches Volkskundemuseum, Ethnographic museum in Graz, Austria.

The Steirisches Volkskundemuseum occupies a former monastery building on Paulustorgasse and spreads its exhibitions across several floors. The rooms display work tools, furniture, jewelry, and household goods from the regional and rural world of Styria.

The museum was founded in 1913 to preserve the regional heritage of Styria through systematic collecting of artifacts. The collections grew over decades through donations and targeted acquisition campaigns.

The collection displays traditional Styrian clothing and everyday items that reflect life across different social classes. You see craft skills and regional traditions rooted in rural culture.

The museum is open Wednesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 18:00, with guided tours available through the collections. The building is compact and easy to navigate, so one to two hours are enough to see the highlights.

The institution maintains a specialized folklore library with thousands of volumes and an extensive photo archive documenting regional customs. These collections extend well beyond the exhibition halls and form one of the most important resources for research on regional life in Austria.
