Sternstein, Mountain summit in Bad Leonfelden, Austria.
Sternstein is a summit in the Bohemian Massif near Bad Leonfelden in Upper Austria, rising to around 1,125 meters (3,690 feet). It has ski slopes and a cable car that brings visitors up to the top area.
A lookout tower was built on the summit in 1898 in honor of Emperor Franz Joseph I, and it still stands there today. Over the course of the 20th century, the mountain gradually developed into a local winter sports area.
In winter, the mountain draws families and locals who come to ski and sled on the slopes. In summer, walkers come up for the wide views over the surrounding forested hills.
The mountain is open year-round, but winter is when the slopes are groomed and the cable car runs regularly. Temperatures at the top are often cooler and windier than in the valley below, so warm layers are useful whatever the season.
The lookout tower at the top is known as the Kaiserwarte, meaning imperial watchtower, and on a clear day the view from its platform reaches far into the Bohemian hills. The name connects directly to the emperor it was built to honor, making the tower a small piece of Habsburg memory in an otherwise everyday ski area.
