Schubertpark, Public park in Währing district, Austria
Schubertpark is a public green space in the 18th district featuring rose gardens, lavender beds, and winding pathways on sloping terrain. The site includes basketball and volleyball courts along with a children's play area containing swings and sand pits.
The grounds began as Währing Cemetery in 1796, once containing the graves of Franz Schubert and Ludwig van Beethoven. Both composers were reinterred elsewhere in 1888, leading to the cemetery's transformation into the park seen today.
The memorial section holds tombstones from the Biedermeier and early historicism periods, creating a connection to the site's past use as a burial ground. These monuments shape the visual character and tell visitors about Vienna's historical relationship with memorials and remembrance.
The park is freely accessible and provides various sports options plus a table tennis area alongside the play zones. The sloping layout with wooden decks and stairs keeps pathways usable even in wet weather or rainy conditions.
Serpentine paths and an access bridge were deliberately added to give the grounds a contemporary natural character. This design approach connects the site's historical significance with modern landscape thinking.
