Himmelsleiter, Wooden observation platform in Schrems, Austria.
The Himmelsleiter is a wooden viewing tower in the Hochmoor Nature Park built from 58 pairs of spruce trunks that reach upward. At the top, visitors find a long platform where they can see across the surrounding wetland landscape.
The tower was completed in 2002, designed by Viennese architect Manfred Rapf. The construction company Graf-Holztechnik from Horn built the structure.
The structure received recognition through the Lower Austrian Timber Construction Prize, demonstrating excellence in regional architectural design and construction methods.
Access to the tower is by way of a paved path available from April through October for visitors. Winter months from November through March bring closure of the site.
The structure uses 108 steel steps combined with wooden pressure beams and steel tension rods between the trunks for stability. This engineering approach allows safe standing at significant heights.
