Heidenturm Kittsee, church building in Kittsee, Austria
Heidenturm in Kittsee is a medieval tower ruin built in Romanesque style with four levels and a square stone structure. It stands isolated in the landscape with remnants of a gable wall visible on the east side, which once belonged to the adjacent Michaelskirche.
The tower was built in the late Middle Ages as part of the defense system for the former village of Lebarn. After the settlement declined, the tower alone remained standing and was later designated as a protected monument.
The tower was originally part of the Michaelskirche and served the village community as a bell and watch tower. Its sturdy Romanesque construction reflects medieval building methods designed for permanence and protection.
The tower is freely accessible to visitors and situated in a quiet rural setting surrounded by open fields. The site is easy to reach and offers a good opportunity to view the structure up close and explore the surrounding countryside.
Locally, the tower is also known as Öder Turm, a name that hints at old stories or traditions surrounding the structure. This alternative name shows how the local population has maintained a connection to this historical place across generations.
