Grünbergseilbahn, Aerial lift in Gmunden, Austria.
The Grünbergseilbahn is an aerial cable car in Gmunden, Upper Austria, that carries passengers from the edge of town up to the Grünberg summit. The valley station sits within walking distance of the town center, and the mountain station stands at around 3,230 feet (985 m) above sea level.
The first cable car on the Grünberg opened in 1957 and ran for decades as the main link between Gmunden and the mountain. It was shut down in 2013 and replaced by the current system, which opened in 2014.
The cable car connects Gmunden with a network of walking trails on the Grünberg that locals use throughout the year, in summer for hiking and in winter for sledding. At the top, the view over the Traunsee is what many visitors come for.
The ride to the top takes only a few minutes, making it a good option even for visitors with limited mobility. Conditions at the summit can be noticeably cooler than in town, so it is worth bringing an extra layer regardless of the season.
Alongside the main cable car, the Grünberg area has a moving carpet conveyor that helps visitors get around shorter distances within the mountain zone. This system is especially useful in winter, when the paths are covered in snow.
