Knoten, Mountain summit in Carinthia, Austria
Knoten is a mountain summit in the Carnic Alps located where Carinthia meets East Tyrol. The peak rises prominently above the surrounding alpine landscape with steep slopes and pastures spread across the nearby terrain.
The summit served as an observation post during World War I when Austrian and Italian forces monitored movements across the mountain range. This strategic vantage point allowed both sides to track activity in the surrounding valleys below.
Local mountaineering clubs maintain several hiking trails leading to the summit, where traditional alpine crosses commemorate climbers who reached the peak.
The climb demands alpine experience and proper equipment along with suitable weather conditions for the entire route. The standard starting point is a parking area in the lower valley from which the walk takes several hours.
On clear days more than one hundred mountain peaks become visible from this summit. The distant view reaches far enough to include both the Dolomites and other major mountain ranges.
