Bärenberg, Mountain summit in Hietzing, Austria
Bärenberg is a mountain summit in the Vienna Woods rising to about 434 meters with a distinctive rounded peak entirely covered in dense forest. The thick vegetation gives the mountain its distinctive character and defines how it appears today.
The summit was first documented in 1819 in the Franciscan Tax Assessment under the name Barn Berg. This early record indicates the area was already established and surveyed in the early 1800s.
The name may derive from the Middle High German word for bear or from 'barn', meaning bare, suggesting an originally treeless summit. This naming hints at how the landscape looked before dense forest covered the peak.
The northern slope connects with City Hiking Trail 4, which leads toward Kaltbründlberg and the Hirschgstemm shelter with multiple route options. The well-maintained path makes access straightforward for hikers of all abilities.
The mountain is composed of sandstone and forms part of the northeastern extension of the Eastern Alps within the Vienna Woods range. This geological feature makes it noteworthy for understanding the alpine structure of the region.
