Burg Scharfeneck, Medieval fortress ruins in Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge, Austria.

Burg Scharfeneck is castle ruins perched on a hillside near Mannersdorf am Leithagebirge and displays the typical layout of a medieval defensive structure with rectangular ground plans and rounded corner towers. The remaining walls still reach impressive heights in many places and preserve Gothic door frames, window openings, and archways that give a clear picture of the original design.

The fortress was built in the 11th century and remained under Hungarian rule for many centuries before passing to Austrian control in the late 1400s. This change of power shaped how the castle developed during the following centuries.

The fortress represents the architectural transition of medieval defenses, incorporating design elements from French and English castles during its reconstruction period.

The ruins are easily reached on foot and offer several viewing spots with good views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors should be prepared for uneven ground and some areas without safety railings.

A lightning strike in 1555 destroyed a tower in the center of the fortress and revealed an underground water reservoir that had been carved deep into the bedrock. This hidden structure shows how medieval builders solved practical problems through clever engineering.
