Schloss Mühlegg

Schloss Mühlegg, building in Gössendorf, Austria

Schloss Mühlegg is a protected monument in Gössendorf built in medieval times with sturdy stone walls arranged in an angular footprint. The two-story structure features minimal decoration on its facades, while its courtyard contains an arcaded walkway with arches.

The castle was first mentioned in 1355 and has stood at this location for over 600 years. In the 17th century, astronomer Johannes Kepler lived here briefly and married at the property.

The castle's name refers to a mill that once operated at this location, connecting the building to the region's craft heritage. This naming reflects how the place served as a center of work and economic activity for centuries.

The castle sits in a quiet rural setting south of Graz, surrounded by open fields and woods. It is advisable to check in advance whether visits are possible, as the building is currently used for various purposes.

An astronomical tower was originally built on the grounds for famous astronomer Johannes Kepler but was demolished in 1868. The roof structure of the castle still shows traces of where this tower once stood.
