Valzur, Mountain settlement in Paznaun Valley, Austria.
Valzur is a mountain settlement at 1501 meters elevation in the Paznaun Valley, consisting of residential buildings set among alpine meadows and surrounded by forest. The location sits at the transition between open grassland and dense woodland, creating a landscape where pastures and tree-covered slopes blend together across the valley floor.
The settlement was originally divided into two sections, Obervalzur and Untervalzur, until a major avalanche in 1999 destroyed the lower part. Following this event, the community rebuilt and consolidated its structures in the safer upper areas of the mountain.
The Lourdeskapelle, built in 1897 by the local pastor, serves as a spiritual gathering place for residents and visitors who pass through the settlement. The small chapel reflects the religious traditions of the Paznaun Valley and remains an active place of worship during local celebrations and ceremonies.
A free ski shuttle links the settlement to Ischgl's center, offering convenient access to the nearby ski area during winter. Visitors should plan for steep mountain terrain and changing weather conditions typical of high alpine areas at any season.
After the 1999 avalanche, seven crosses were placed to commemorate those who died and mark the location where the lower village once stood. These memorials remain visible on the hillside and serve as a quiet reminder of how natural forces shaped the community's past.
