It was founded in 1862 and developed from a simple plant collection into a research center. Today it is managed by the Carinthian State Museum and supports scientific work on local plant life.
The garden takes its name from Kreuzberg, the hill on whose slopes it sits. You can observe how local plants thrive in different zones that recreate various natural habitats.
The site is accessible on weekdays from October through April, with extended hours and daily access available from May through September. The grounds are easily accessible on foot and work well for a short visit or for those interested in plant life.
The garden sits in a former quarry at the base of Kreuzberg, where the uneven terrain creates distinct small-scale climate zones. This diversity allows many different plant communities to flourish side by side.
