Schloss Kalsdorf

Schloss Kalsdorf is a Renaissance château near Ilz with four wings arranged around a square courtyard, rising three stories high. Two projecting corner towers with pyramidal roofs mark the structure and give it a distinctive appearance from the surrounding landscape.

The château was first documented in 1419 and remained under the Herbersdorf family's control for generations. The northern and western wings were built during their tenure and continue to define the structure's character today.

The courtyard enclosed by four wings created a sheltered inner space where the household could gather away from the outside world. This layout reflects how noble families designed their seats to balance private life with the exercise of authority over their lands.

The château opens to visitors during art exhibitions held once or twice yearly in evening hours. It is worth checking in advance for current exhibition schedules so you can plan your visit and explore the building and courtyard at your own pace.

Two stone lions that once stood in Graz were later moved to different locations, including the Agricultural School in Hatzendorf and the Joanneum Museum. This dispersal of the sculptures reveals how this château's history connects to the cultural networks of the region.
