Blauspitze, Mountain summit in Kals am Großglockner, Austria.
Blauspitze is a mountain peak in the Granatspitzgruppe range near Kals am Großglockner, reaching around 2,575 meters in elevation. Its southwestern section features steep rock walls that demand technical climbing skills on the ascent.
The first documented ascent took place in 1891, establishing the peak as a climbing destination in the Eastern Alps. Since then, the infrastructure on the mountain has evolved to accommodate later climbers.
The name refers to the blue-tinted rock formation visible on the peak under certain light conditions. This distinctive feature has shaped how local climbers identify and talk about the mountain.
The best climbing window opens from June through September when snow and ice coverage is minimal. Bring technical climbing gear and solid climbing experience before attempting the ascent.
From the summit, you can see four separate mountain ranges at once: the Granatspitzgruppe, Glocknergruppe, Schrobbergruppe, and parts of the Venedigergruppe. This location gives visitors a rare view of multiple alpine systems in a single panorama.
