Wurbauerkogel, Mountain summit and viewpoint in Windischgarsten, Austria
Wurbauerkogel is a mountain in Windischgarsten that rises to 858 meters and offers views across the Upper Austrian landscape and surrounding valleys from its peak. The location is reachable through hiking trails or a cable car service.
The single-seat chairlift from Windischgarsten to the summit was built in 1957 and still has a nostalgic character. In 1980 a 1,523-metre summer toboggan run with 16 curves opened, then counted among Europe's longest; a landslide closed it in 2021 and it was dismantled in June 2022. The Alpine Coaster followed in 2004.
The summit's name comes from the Wurbauer farm, and the mountain is the local hill of Windischgarsten. The six-storey Panoramaturm tower holds the exhibition "Faszination Fels", and the 1957 single-seat chairlift from the village centre is still in use. A 3D archery course and a via ferrata park at the Bannholzmauer add to the hiking.
The best time to visit is from May to October when the cable car operates and weather conditions are stable. Hikers can use the trails year-round but should wear appropriate footwear and dress for changing mountain conditions.
The Alpine Coaster opened in 2004: a 760-metre track with a 63-metre drop, three loops, seven banked curves, three jumps, six bridges and ten waves, reaching 40 km/h. The older summer toboggan run, built in 1980 at 1,523 metres, closed after a 2021 landslide and was dismantled in June 2022.
