Schloss Sauerbrunn

Schloss Sauerbrunn is a castle situated on a hillside at 750 meters elevation, featuring a square floor plan with arcaded courtyards and a fortress-like tower in its southern corner. The grounds contain twelve mineral springs that have been used for medicinal water production for centuries.

Franz von Teuffenbach constructed the castle between 1547 and 1552, establishing it as a hospital and poorhouse institution that operates as a foundation to this day. This original purpose continues to shape its role in the community.

Inside, wooden ceilings with detailed carved patterns and the Teuffenbach family crest above the entrance door reflect the heritage of those who built it. These features remain visible throughout the rooms today.

The castle sits on elevated terrain, so wearing sturdy shoes and allowing extra time for walking through the grounds helps visitors explore the full site comfortably. The location is somewhat remote, making it wise to check access details and visiting conditions before planning your trip.

In 2008, the castle was purchased by a company owned by the founder of Red Bull, bringing modern enterprise into the historic site. A decade later, a brewery began operations on nearby grounds, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary business.
