Schloss Niederleis, Renaissance castle and museum in Niederleis, Austria.
Schloss Niederleis is a Renaissance castle with four wings surrounding an inner courtyard in a structured layout. A stone bridge dating to 1735 connects the main structure to the tower gate and passes over where moats once stood.
A fortification was first established on this site in 1308, then rebuilt into the present Renaissance form in the 1500s. During the following centuries, especially in the 1600s, it underwent major structural changes.
The castle displays art collections featuring Italian furniture, Spanish leather wallpapers, and religious objects spanning several centuries. Visitors can observe items that show the artistic connections between Italy, Spain, and Central Europe.
Visitors must arrange guided tours in advance through the site manager, as the building is not freely accessible. Tours are offered from May through October and should be booked well ahead of time.
The castle chapel holds a large cross from the 14th century attributed to the school of Giotto. This piece hangs above a Spanish Baroque altar and represents a rare meeting of Italian and Spanish artistic traditions.
